There are two main ways of providing VoIP telephony to a business:- A Pure IP telephone system A Hosted telephone service.
A Pure IP telephone system is very similar to a traditional telephone system in that it is situated on the site where it will provide the telephony function. Extensions are directly connected over the internal structured cabling. It can though use traditional trunks (PSTN & ISDN) as well as IP Direct connects (SIP trunks) for inbound and outbound calls. At present this provides the most reliable way of ensuring business continuity, at least until Quality of Services issues and SLA’s are provided by all the major carriers.
Hosted telephony is the provision of telephony functions on a shared remote telephone system. It requires a xDSL connection or data line to provide the bandwidth for the calls. If specified correctly a good reliable choice for a telephone system as there are no requirements for maintenance contracts and all services are updated by the service provider. Handsets are plugged into business network and connect to telephony server over data connections.
